March Madness!

A 2 seed in the South. Couldn’t of asked for a better seed and region to be in. The Vols play Friday vs Colgate Raiders. Colgate is one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the nation, and well Tennessee seems to struggle against 3 point teams. One man on Colgate names Jordan Burns, is one of the top Guards in the country, averaging 20 points a game. In the Patriot league Championship game he got 35 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assist and went 9 for 12 from 3 point range, they are an overall well put together team, and as you know the Patriot league teams are very dangerous come March.

Tennessee starts play in Columbus, OH, if Tennessee wins round one then in the 2nd round they will play the winner of Iowa vs Cincinnati, which Cincinnati is only an hour and a half south west, Virtually a home game for the Bearcats. With all that being said there are a couple things here. Cincinnati is a good team, but they play in a very weak conference, the AAC only has Houston in it. The Bearcats haven’t played anyone this year worth anything besides Houston. A Cincinnati that lost to Ohio State to open the season, Mississippi St handled them with ease, and East Carolina who finished the season 10-21 and missed the tourney. Houston beat them twice in the regular season and then the Cats beat them to win the AAC tournament. Bearcats have the AAC player of the year in Jarron Cumberland, But that’s all they have, Keith Williams averages 10 points a game and he’s the closet to Cumberland. Iowa is a decent team, and I personally have them beating Cincinnati in the first round. Iowa is a depth team, not one player with a great average, but they’re all around 15 points a game, even the players off the bench.

The South region is the easiest region in my eyes. Virginia is the number 1 seed, which they have been off and on all season. There is not a team in this region that I see and I get worried about playing. This should be a cake walk to the Final Four for the Vols. If they get to the Final Four the Midwest has some scary teams in it, that would make an interesting matchup, with North Carolina, Kentucky, Houston, Kansas and of course Auburn.

This should be a great month of basketball and I’m excited to go to Minnesota and watch my Vols cut the nets down!

Tennessee vs Kentucky

Boy oh boy, what a day in Nashville! The boys got off to a wonderful start, it got a little out of hand after half time, but never gave up and got to pull out the W! Surprise, Alexander had another off day, fouled out with 10 min left in the 2nd half, terrible game all around for him. 2 points, 3 rebounds, And that’s not going to cut it. If this team wants to get deep into the tournament and play in Minnesota Kyle needs to get his act together or find someone that can. Turner came up huge with the final 3, but that’s about all that he did, 7 points, 3 rebounds. Turner has the best defense Tennessee has, but today it was not there. Williams had a very rocky start, only having 4 points until about 12 min left in the 2nd half, but he got a couple free throws and was able to get dialed in and ended the game strong with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Schofield was, well Schofield. Ended with 21 points, and had a couple huge shots in the end to seal the game.

Got to play a tough Auburn team for the championship, Auburn and Florida came down to the wire in the first game. Auburn is a very dangerous 3 point shooting team, they have 2 great shooters and you control them, you win, its that simple. Bryce Brown averages 16 points a game, and in the win against Tennessee last week he had 16 points and 3 rebounds. Their other player is Jared Harper, averages 15 points a game and in the game vs Tennessee he got 16 points and 3 rebound as well, also 8 assists. The wild card in the first match up was Chuma Okeke, he only averages 11 points a game, but in the Tennessee game he went off, scoring 22 points, 5 boards. this should be a very interesting match up, that if played smart, should be a walk in the park for the Vols.

Now here is my unpopular opinion. Turner needs to be off the bench, yes he hit the big shot today, and he is amazing in the clutch, But for the rest of the game he’s off. Alexander needs replaced by Pons, Pons is a strong mini Grant Williams, Alexanders 2 points a game isn’t helping. Bowden is wonderful off the bench, lets give him the start over Turner and let Turner come in for foul trouble and any other time that’s needed,

Tennessee vs Miss St preview

The Vols take on Mississippi St on the 15th, Miss St is coming off a dominating performance against Texas A&M with an 80-54 win. Tennessee played Miss St once this season, with the Vols winning 71-54. The Vols key to winning this game will come down to their 6th man, the last few games have been rough to say the least, in the loss to Auburn, Alexander had 4 points in 24 min, Turner had 5 points in 35 min, and 1-8 in 3 pointers. Jordan Bone had a decent game at 17 points in 37 min, but only 2-8 from 3 points. Tennessee only lost by 4 points so Turner and Bone need to get a better look from behind the arch or don’t take the shot. Bowden from the bench got 16 points in 31 min, 3-7 from 3 point range. Miss St has a very good depth from the bench, with 4 strong players and 3 more with good experience if needed. Need to limit Peters and Carters in their 3 point shooting, Weatherspoon is the best player on the Bulldogs, average 18.5 points, but Tennessee has the 2 time SEC player of the year in Grant Williams. Averaging 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds, strong inside and can shoot from behind the arch when needed, and when he goes to the line, he don’t miss. Should be a good game, I’m going with my Vols winning 75-60, going on to play the winner of Alabama and Kentucky.
